Since its official opening at the EcoPark in Tuen Mun in July this year, Hong Kong's First EV Battery Processing Plant has attracted continued attention from the government, industry and the media, with a number of delegations visiting to exchange views on power battery recycling, resource recovery and regional cooperation.
On 14 August, a Macao delegation led by Mr. Ip Kuong Lam, Director of the Environmental Protection Bureau of the Macao SAR Government, visited the EcoPark in Hong Kong, where Mr. Ip and Dr. CHUI Ho Kwong, Director of the Environmental Protection Department, co-chaired the 18th Hong Kong–Macao Environmental Cooperation Meeting. The two sides then toured Hong Kong's First EV Battery Processing Plant at EcoPark to learn about EV battery recycling and resource recovery. Envision Greenwise team exchanged views with representatives from both sides on the growing adoption of electric vehicles and battery recycling trends in Hong Kong and Macau, and explored how green, low-carbon development and technological innovation can drive cooperation across the Greater Bay Area. Representatives from relevant mainland government departments also visited the facility to research Hong Kong's EV battery recycling policies and market landscape.
The Plant has also received visits from a number of companies and industry organisations, including Gotion High-tech, CATL, BYD and CLP, as well as the Service Managers Association (SMA), the Federation of Automobile Service Industry Hong Kong, the Federation of Hong Kong Industries (FHKI), the Business Environment Council (BEC), the Housing Department Structural Engineers Association, the Society of Operations Engineers (SOE), and the Automobile General Association Macau-China. During the visits, delegations were briefed on the plant's operations and power battery recycling pathways, and held lively discussions on the facility's integration with the local recycling system, battery processing solutions, and potential collaboration opportunities.
Hong Kong Commercial Daily conducted an exclusive interview with the FHKI delegation. In the interview, FHKI Executive Deputy Chairman Mr. Jude Chow described the project as a strong demonstration of Hong Kong's push for new quality productive forces, and noted that it has changed the previous model of simply exporting recycled lithium batteries, showcasing the city's local high-value processing technology and capability.
Ms. Kwok Ho Yee, Chief Operating Officer of Envision Greenwise, remarked: "We are pleased to engage with government and industry representatives from various places, and to raise greater awareness of how power battery recycling operates in practice. The plant will continue to serve as a platform for dialogue on technology and collaboration, joining hands with partners across sectors to advance the circular economy."
-About Hong Kong's First EV Battery Processing Plant
Located at the EcoPark in Tuen Mun and occupying over 100,000 square feet, the Hong Kong's First EV Battery Processing Plant officially commenced operations in June 2026. It adopts patented German technology and integrates automated and intelligent solutions, covering the entire processing chain from collection and safe discharging to smart dismantling and high-efficiency material recovery. The plant currently has a planned annual capacity of 10,000 tonnes, equivalent to the processing of approximately 20,000 to 30,000 retired EV battery units.
Through advanced machinery and processing techniques, locally retired lithium batteries are converted into "black mass" rich in strategic metals such as lithium, cobalt and nickel, which is supplied to the mainland and neighbouring regions; after further refining, it can be used to produce cathode materials for new batteries. The plant will also support research and applications in the local energy sector, driving the development of green energy.
